I bought this on the recommendation of America's Test Kitchen, as I am wont to do, and it has not disappointed. Contrasted with our previous several blenders, this is superb! Most importantly is the job it does of blending, and it is a marvel of consistency. A very close second is the ease of cleanup, and the whole thing goes right in the dishwasher, and I don't have to mess with taking the base apart and losing the rubber seal, because there is no removable base and there is no rubber seal to worry about. The stand is heavy and solid, the whole thing is a beast, so nice!

I have been using this blender for 1.5 years after my last one burned out and have loved every minute of it. I pretty much use it to make protein drinks / smoothies about 3-4 times a week. The motor is powerful and the settings are great. It is loud but then again we're talking about a blender! Primarily I wanted something that would last for years.

This morning I was using the blender to make one of my smoothies that is exactly like all the others I have made in the past. The unit was blending away and then all of sudden it made a horrible screeching noise and the pitcher hopped out of the base and the unit started spewing rubber and started smoking from the coupling on the base unit. I emptied the pitcher and the grinder at the bottom of the pitcher had discharged the seal into the pitcher and the grinder unit was cock-eyed. The coupling on the base had also been ground down so it is unusable.

I just got off the phone with KitchenAid and they gave the usual response - sorry, it's past the 1 year warranty, we can't do anything for you. Once again I am off to order replacement parts from repairclinic.com to repair this unit that I thought would have lasted more than 1.5 years.

[Update - 11/7/11} - After replacing both the carafe (aka pitcher) and the coupling (not easy at all - see the following YouTube Video I posted on doing this: [...]) I will humbly admit that it might have been operator error that caused the pitcher to jump off the base. I was not holding down the pitcher when it was blending and something may have gotten into the grinder that caused it to hop off the base. Lesson: hold down the pitcher while blending.


KitchenAid KSB465ER Review by P. SMITH

I've had this blender about two weeks now and I don't like it. I decided to buy a KitchdnAid instead of an Osterizer. I've had three Osterizer blenders. They are EXCELLENT blenders, but they don't last over a year; the motor konks out, but it's the only blender I've ever had that really chops ice until there's no ice left.

The KitchenAid blender doesn't have a "soft start" button, as the instructions say. I've tried every way I know to try to get it to start slower, so my food in the blender doesn't immediately fly up to the top and coat the inside of the lid, which has to be scraped to get the food off. Also, when the Chop Ice button is pressed, it pauses and starts, pauses and starts, hardly chopping the ice at all. I must use the Liquify button to get the ice decently chopped and then it's not chopped completely. I'll use this blender until this motor konks out and then I guess I'll have to go back to the Osterizer. Even though it only lasts approximately one year, at least it starts slow when you want it to, and really chops ice and everything else, too. I wouldn't recommend this blender; it's too frustrating to use it.
